What the contractor checks

Repair or replace?

Single-speed vs. variable-speed. Federal efficiency standards for dedicated-purpose pool pumps took effect in July 2021, so many replacement pumps sold today are variable-speed models. Running a variable-speed pump at lower speeds for longer can use less energy than a single-speed pump. Your savings depend on your schedule and your rates. Tucson Electric Power (TEP) has offered efficiency programs at times. Check TEP's current programs directly, because we don't list amounts that may have changed.

If the motor is the only thing that failed and the pump is fairly new, repair can make sense. For an older single-speed pump, ask the contractor to price both.

FAQ

Why won't my pump prime?

Most often it's air getting into the suction side: a low water level, a cracked lid or dry O-ring, a clogged skimmer or pump basket, or a suction-side leak.

Does a variable-speed pump need new plumbing?

Usually not, but sizing, wiring and automation compatibility matter. The contractor will check.

How long should my pump run in summer?

It depends on pool size, pump and usage. Ask your contractor to set a schedule that keeps the water clean.
